Old Hay

Posted By Bob on April 9, 2009

old-hayThe barn hasn’t been used for almost 10 years and there is quite a bit of loose hay in the hay mow. We’ve slowly been cleaning it up as we need more space for our own hay. The result is quite a huge pile of really really old dusty hay that we mix with our manure. Eventually it will be all gone and reused as compost to help improve our soil and provide nutrients to our plants.

The Return of Winter (and the Geese)

Posted By Bob on April 8, 2009

snow-geeseWinter came back, which although not unheard of in April is certainly unwelcome. Yesterday any outside work was done once again with gloves and toques and coats. By this weekend we’re supposed to be back in the warmer weather.

Maple Buds

maple-budsThe silver maple trees are enjoyed the warm weather of the weekend and started to send out little “feelers”. Most of the growth will slow down today with the nice April snow we received.

Plants Galore

Posted By Bob on April 6, 2009

more-plantsWe continue to transplant daily. The time of year is changing however, and it is easy to work in the greenhouse for a while and then feel “done” for the day. In the next week we’ll turn our attention to spring clean up of the entire property. The winter wind has a habit of blowing things into the strangest places.

Spring Run Off

Posted By Bob on April 3, 2009

spring-run-offEven though most of the snow has melted we still have significant run off in our small creek. The fields are saturated with water right now, so any bit of rain goes directly into the ditches, creeks, and eventually river.

Transplanting

Posted By Bob on April 2, 2009

transplantingTransplanting is in full swing. We pull the baby plants from their plugs and put them into larger plug sheets or pots. This will be their last artificial home for the next few weeks and then they’ll go right into the ground.
